Overview

"It's me. No, it's you. Maybe it's both of us? We all want to avoid drama and pain in our relationships, yet we remain stuck in never-ending cycles of misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and triggering interactions. Sometimes it just seems easier to decide we are ""done"" with people rather than continue trying over and over again. Even our best and closest relationships--with our partners, friends, family, and colleagues--can feel unduly challenging. In this straightforward guide, expert relationship therapists Edrica Richardson and Ilene Cohen get to the heart of what it means to really be in fulfilling relationships and why connecting with the ones you love can feel so hard. You'll learn how ""doing the work"" encourages healing and growth within yourself and within your relationships. Filled with activities, quizzes, and prompts that offer support in every step of the process, This Isn't Working for Me will help you go deeper in your relationships by exploring: - Six steps to creating the relationships you want--Discover the foundational elements that will help you build (or build back) strong, sustainable connections. - Self-empowerment--Learn how a willingness to focus on yourself helps cultivate resilience, trust, and a stronger sense of self. - The science of relationships--Understand what happens in the brain and body when you are upset and angry, and learn the benefits of turning impulsive reactions into responses that you choose. Creating and maintaining strong, fulfilling relationships doesn't mean disregarding your own boundaries or letting go of what you want for the sake of ""keeping the peace"" in your home, family, friend group, or workplace. Instead, it means being more yourself! By moving into the fullness of who you are, you can claim freedom and agency in your own life, learn how to release blame, and cultivate happier and healthier relationships with those you love."

But if readers commit, they will find that they will do relationships differently. So, take a deep breath, and lean in. You will be warmed by the intimate discourse."" --Stephanie P. Hutcheson, PhD, clinical psychologist and associate professor of psychology at University of The Bahamas ""A step-by-step, thoughtfully sequenced book to help anyone understand, assess, and address their relationship issues. One of the highlights of the book is its inclusivity and how it speaks to multiple types of relationships, making it easy to recommend to all."" --Kristopher G. Hall, PhD, LPC, associate professor of clinical mental health counseling at the University of San Diego ""This Isn't Working for Me is a useful book for anyone who wants to learn more about the nature of relationships. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to look at and work on their own relationships. The interactive questions and exercises are a helpful guide and allow for the opportunity to grow and mature while defining a clearer self with others."" --Olivia Schlapfer Colmer, PhD, LMFT ""This Isn't Working for Me is an incredibly helpful, easy-to-understand guide for navigating relationships. It's empowering, as it helps you comprehend how your personal contributions can perpetuate patterns that keep you stuck in relationships. The approach is nonjudgmental, encouraging you to find ways to change your interaction styles instead of attempting to alter other people. I've learned a lot and feel that I can regain control, finding solutions to foster better and healthier relationships."" --Natalie Colmer, counseling therapist ""In This Isn't Working for Me, the authors present an insightful journey into understanding relationships and our role within them. This book is an essential read for anyone who has ever wondered why their relationships don't seem to work as they'd hoped and how to make them more fulfilling. The authors' approach to relationships is refreshing, emphasizing the importance of self-empowerment and self-development as a pathway to healthier and happier connections with others. This isn't about compromising yourself for the sake of harmony, but rather being more authentically you and reaping the rewards that come with it. The six-step roadmap offered is clear, comprehensive, and easy to follow. It provides an excellent guide for anyone at any stage of their relationship journey. The activities, quizzes, and guided prompts are thought-provoking and supportive, offering practical tools for personal growth. This Isn't Working for Me is more than just a book; it's a transformative experience. It offers strategies for releasing blame and moving toward more fulfilling relationships. If you're ready to take control of your relationships and find the happiness and fulfillment you deserve, this book is a must-read."" --Thalia Rydz, LCSW, PhD ""In This Isn't Working for Me, Drs. Ilene Cohen and Edrica Richardson make a compelling case that one should not have to succumb to bad relationships. They not only encourage readers to do the work that will lead to better relationships and a better self, but also empower readers by showing them how they can manifest an elevated state of being. What makes the book unique is its balanced approach. It highlights the knowledge the two authors have by providing academic references, while refraining from using complicated language that would lessen the interest of readers. The authors artfully interweave intellectual thought and relatable storytelling, thus making the book both enlightening and engaging. This book does an excellent job of making it plain that we are the main character in our relationships, and that the root of a relationship cannot fully be explored until we first explore who we are at our core. It is this illumination of the power of the self, the importance of differentiating who we are from what others expect us to be, that makes this book a powerful and important read. If you desire a deeper understanding of yourself and those around you, then this book is a must-get. It has the potential to help transform you and your relationships."" --Rudy Jean-Bart, associate dean of criminal justice at Broward College"
