OverviewThe Nain Rouge, French for ""red dwarf,"" is a fabled gnome that has lived in Detroit before it was settled by Cadillac in 1701. For over 300 years the Nain Rouge is reported to appear during various historical events throughout the city. Originally seen as a malevolent character in the folklore of Detroit, the Nain Rouge is actually the consummate outsider, blamed for any and all disasters in Detroit's history while being ignored for his positive contributions to the richness and development of the city. Activities change dramatically over the centuries and every generation brings a new excitement to Detroit. With the influx of new energy, the time has come for the Nain Rouge to reclaim his standing as Detroit's honourary grand citizen, contributor, booster and as the oldest resident historian of the city. Never to have sought credit for his contributions before, the Nain Rouge reveals himself to the public for the first time in this visually rich guide book of amazing thinks to see and do in Detroit today. But a kinder, gentler fiery-looking dude is featured in a new book, 'Things I Do in Detroit: A Guide Book to the Coolest Places by the Nain Rouge.' It's a collection of photos that reveals the Nain (well, a convincingly costumed stand-in) is actually a city booster who loves its rich legacy and sites. Detroit Free Press The guide book takes you to more than 100 locations throughout the city. The book is broken into sections, so it is easy to find what you are looking for. Each location includes a brief synopsis by Krieger, and the Nain's own take. The photos are where the book shines. There is something fun and cheeky about a smiling Nain Rouge holding a tennis racket at the Indian Village Tennis Club, or him serving Saganaki in Greek Town. Daily Detroit It's written and photographed by Dave Krieger, who says he began the project as a reaction to the 'ruin porn' of the last decade. Instead of that, Krieger wanted to create an upbeat book about the intact beauties of the city. Detroit Metro Times "As spirits go, the Nain was no angel.
