Overview

The Aztecs were a mighty civilization, conquering and enslaving other Mesoamerican civilizations, ruling with terror and might, and at the peak of its power under the Emperor Montezuma II. Their hand of power stretched over Mesoamerica, even over the Mayans, but newcomers threaten their land, their stability, their rule, white men who came on ships, and on animals never before seen in the land, horses. Kirk Munroe (1850-1930) was an American writer and conservationist. He was born in a log cab near Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and spent most of his youth on the frontier. In 1876 he was hired as a reporter for the New York Sun, soon after which he became the first editor of Harper's Young People magazine. Where he worked and for whom varied greatly after that, but throughout his life he exhibited his love for writing, contributing titles such as Wakulla (1886), The Flamingo Feather (1887), and The White Conquerors, to name a few.
