Her realization is confirmed again when her granddaughter Alison informs her that she heard a dragonfly at their campground cry moments before it died. A stranger, Gaff ""of the ancient ones,"" abruptly shows up and surprisingly informs the family that the dead dragon fly holds importance for a task that fate has in store for them. Shortly after, in another realm, they encounter Ademus, the Guardian of Alien Words, who provides shocking knowledge about some adversaries that have arisen with the intention of destroying the entire planet. These mysterious beings have also seized the children of all the kingdom rulers, as well as certain youngsters who were being groomed to infiltrate and thwart the opposition's efforts. Holden, Mema's son, is heading the mission, and he immediately realizes that the adversaries want to use the children as props for retribution, which would likely have unfathomably horrible results.
