Dining in the house of that friend of mine, Lord John Russell was first subjected by him to a severe cross-examination on the question of the Alabama. Driven into a corner, the Foreign Secretary of England had finally to avow that he had really been quite aware of the character of the Alabama when it left port. After this pitiful confession and an expression of repentance, the desired introductions were given to Lord John Russell.
