OverviewThe Velvet Underground was a rock group formed during 1964 in New York City, New York, U.S. by singer/guitarist Lou Reed, multi-instrumentalist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Angus MacLise, who was replaced by Moe Tucker the following year. The band was first active from 1965 - 1973, having been briefly managed by the pop artist Andy Warhol, being the house group at the Factory and Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable events from 1966 to 1967. Their eponymous debut L.P., The Velvet Underground & Nico, with German-born singer and model Nico, was released in 1967 to indifferent reviews, selling poorly but was later critically acclaimed, Rolling Stone magazine describing it as the most prophetic rock album ever made .
