Overview

"Genuinely laugh-out-loud funny, these 125 cartoons from the popular Guardian comic series Peter Duggan's Artoons tackle the whole of Western art history, from cave art to Koons. What Kate Beaton has done for literature, The Untrue History of Art does for art, managing the tricky feat of being both lightheartedly silly and refreshingly intelligent. Find out what Pointillists do on their days off, why Surrealists hate mornings, and why contrapposto is so cool. You'll get to see Pre-Raphaelite wrestling, Manet's picnic fails, Harry Hockney vs Voldemort, Andy Warhol's childhood on the planet Vulcan, Joan Miro's yoyo, and Yayoi Kusama's obsession with Damien Hirst's head. Two extremely helpful indexes mean you'll never miss a reference, which means it is not just funny but a great entry point into a wider appreciation of art. Gently mocking but never cruel, the humour stems from a true love of art, and a real affection and appreciation for those who make it. This volume is a bigger and better version of the hardcover book Peter Duggan's Artoons, published in 2015 by Penguin/Random House. It has a load more cartoons and whole new chunks of funny and informative yickety yak from the author. Reviews

Reviews for Peter Duggan's Artoons. The Untrue History of Art is a much expanded, self-published version of this book. Irreverent and uproariously hilarious Peter Duggan's Artoons is sensational. It's a veritable treasure trove; clever, funny, and frequently irreverent, it strips away so many pretensions. It works at many levels. The cartoons are mainly satirical and his artistic skill is captured in page after page of well observed critique. I can't remember when I last laughed so much; humour is very subjective, but virtually every page strikes an amusing chord. The art world can appear impenetrable and exclusive. This powerful little tome takes a pop at all those pretensions, strips them bare, pinpoints the absurdity with a fresh and frequently hilarious perspective. Every cartoon works because each is contemporary and genuinely comic. They challenge, they amuse, they entertain, but most of all, I found they inspire. As they're largely built around 'famous' works of art or artists, I came across works and people I wasn't familiar with. I'm blown away by Artoons. It's genuinely hilarious. Every time I go back, I see something new; for example in a Warhol expose, on first read, I'd missed the Munch depicted in the background. There are works within works. Peter Duggan makes his art look easy. It's not. He's talented, intelligent and clever. Gently mocking, but never cruel. I absolutely love this book because it makes me laugh. I left it on the table and within minutes of a couple of visitors arriving, it had inspired a heated debate about the relative merits of some of Damien Hirst's work! It's just brilliant! Vicuna TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE 5.0 out of 5 stars Witty and original and knowledgeable I was a fan of Peter Duggan's Artoons in The Guardian...When one has the whole book the sheer inventiveness and wit is more obvious than when you're reading a weekly column. Peter Duggan carries his learning lightly, the jokes are genuinely funny and insightful. For example, Diego and Rivero and Frida Kahlo take a trip out to a stunning landscape and set up their easels in awe of the beauty of nature. The last frame of the Artoon shows Rivera asleep and Kahlo holding up a mirror to paint a self portrait. Purpleheart TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE 5.0 out of 5 stars
