Overview

"The Truth About Sex Trafficking tells the story of Angela before, during and after she was the victim of sex trafficking. As a child, Angela experienced every imaginable type of child abuse. At the age of seventeen, she was a perfect target when sex traffickers entered her life. By the time she realized what was happening, Angela was ""way deep in the game"" and didn't know how to get out. Her situation continued to worsen for almost two years, until she was finally able to leave the life of sex trafficking. Now almost two decades later, married with three children, Angela still deals with the effects of being trafficked and abused. As she states in the book, ""You don't just get your life together and never have problems again."" However, Angela has found a measure of peace after intense counseling and years of hard work to recover. She has helped countless others in her work as an anti-trafficking advocate. The Truth About Sex Trafficking is an honest, unsentimental depiction of the horrors of sex trafficking written by an author with almost twenty years of journalism experience. The book is heartfelt, heartbreaking, and also refreshing in its clear storytelling that does not sensationalize. In addition to hearing Angela's story in her own words, the reader will hear from many others who work closely with sex trafficking victims and survivors, including law enforcement officers, counselors, juvenile probation officers, attorneys, anti-trafficking advocates and many others. Chapter topics include Human Sex Trafficking, Technology (including the role of pornography), Children, Trauma, Law, Getting Help, and Resources. The book also has notes and an index that will help those doing research on sex trafficking and related topics."

Reviews

This book is exceptional! Very well thought out and informative. It is a must read for parents and all those working in the medical or social service field. As an adoptive mother and foster parent to children that have been trafficked, I wish I had had this information when my journey began. The book is easy to read, with just enough story line to keep you interested. I have read many articles and books on human trafficking and this is hands down the best I have read. It gives a real picture of not only what trafficking is but how to interact and show compassion to those that have been trafficked. Melody Higgins, LMSW, Children's of Alabama As a licensed professional counselor, I read this book looking to see what new thing I could learn. Ms. Patterson's work did not disappoint. The stories are absolutely heartbreaking while eye opening at the same time. Cherie May Edwards, LPC-S The author approaches the subject matter with an open and non-judgmental mindset. She doesn't shy away from this uncomfortable topic. People often only hear or read about the statistics of sex crimes. The victim is usually a nameless shadowy silhouette next to the news reporter's face. Rarely do people have an opportunity to hear from the victim-their experiences and how they escaped. The Truth About Sex Trafficking talks about the immeasurable resources that law enforcement and anti-sex trafficking advocates use to help the victims and survivors. The book also allows the reader to clearly understand how anyone can become a victim of sex trafficking. It removes the secure feeling of 'It only happens to other people or those kinds of people.' This book lifts that facade and allows us to see the ugliness that may exist right under our noses. Only in the light of this brutal honesty can we, as a society, begin to identify and help victims who are in need. Jennifer L. Anderson, M.S. in Skeletal Trauma Analysis and Medicolegal Death Investigation; Crime Laboratory Technician, Crime Scene Unit, Baltimore City Police Department Melanie K. Patterson fully explores the multifaceted and often misunderstood subject of Human Trafficking. From defining its many, often tangled layers, to laws and resources, The Truth About Sex Trafficking is a must read for anyone who knows of the term human trafficking, but has no clear understanding. It should also be a required read for anyone who will be working in the many fields that bring them in contact with a potential trafficked individual.
