The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan - Richard Hannay is shocked when Colonel Scudder races into his room one evening to tell him Prussion sleeper agents are targeting a visiting foreign minister as a precursor to their plot to start World War I. The Colonel is murdered later, and Hannay is framed for his death. He escapes to Scotland to clear his name and stop the agents.This novella first appeared in Blackwood's Magazine and was later turned into a literary bestseller. Scottish author John Buchan (1875 - 1940) was a novelist and historian who served as Governor General of Canada. He also had a legal career and served as a private secretary to the administrator of various colonies in southern Africa. He also wrote propaganda for the British war effort in World War One.

Scottish historian John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir (1875 - 1940) was a novelist and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada. After a legal career, Buchan began writing career while in his political and diplomatic careers, serving as a private secretary to the colonial administrator of various colonies in southern Africa. He wrote propaganda for the British war effort during World War I, and was later elected Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities. In 1935 he was appointed Governor General of Canada by King George V, on the recommendation of Prime Minister of Canada R. B. Bennett. He occupied the post until his death in 1940. Buchan received a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the United Kingdom.
