Overview

Andreu Mas-Colell has been doing pioneering work using differential topology in the analysis of general equilibrium. This work is regarded as outstanding and one of the major contributions to the development of rigorous economic theory in the last twenty years. The articles he has written have been difficult and technically demanding. In this book he brings this work together to show its scope and its power. He presents the analysis in a way which makes it accessible to the broader range of economic theorists and advanced students. This book has been long awaited as a seminal contribution to the subject.

'This thorough and lucid account of the use of differential methods in general equilibrium theory since 1970 is the most important new book in mathematical economics in over a decade.' Journal of Economic Literature This thorough and lucid account of the use of differential methods in general equilibrium theory since 1970 is the most important new book in mathematical economics in over a decade. The book evolved from the lecture notes for a graduate course first taught by Mas-Colell at Berkeley in 1976. The author's primary goal is to develop in the reader a firm grasp of the differentiable techniques, in particular the use of transversality and the implicit function theorem. At the same time, in the process of illustrating those techniques, he gives a systematic account of most of the main topics in general equilibrium theory. The main contribution of the book is that it provides a...unified treatment of recent developments in a very large field, organized around a clear vision of what is important. The extraordinary quality of the many diagrams makes the book unique among books on general equilibrium theory. Journal of Economic Literature Mas-Colell's book is one of the first and still one of the most complete and most rigorous of the few textbooks on the applications of differential topology and global analysis to the theory of general economic equilibrium....the book is excellent.
