This thorough guide to the burgeoning Tea Party movement goes beyond the typical overheated political rhetoric to discuss where the party came from, what it's about, who's involved, and where it's headed. The Tea Party Movement is not a book of advocacy. Rather, it is intended to explain the party—its history, ideas, and strategies—from a nonpartisan perspective. Starting with its origins in Ron Paul's 2008 presidential campaign, the book looks at how the movement grew through grassroots efforts, how it caught the nation's attention, and how it began to achieve political success as Tea Party-backed candidates helped the Republicans retake control of the House of Representatives. Various strands of thought that have influenced the Tea Party are analyzed and its motivations explored. In addition, the book examines the way the media has treated the party and how the Republican mainstream has struggled to adapt to this vocal constituency. Some of the less-publicized ways the party is working to advance its cause are revealed, including the promotion of state nullification of unconstitutional federal laws. Yuri N. Maltsev, PhD, is a professor of economics at Carthage College, WI. He was a Peace Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, and has consulted with different departments of the U.S. government and testified before Congress. Roman Skaskiw, MFA, is an author whose work has appeared in The New York Times’ Homefires blog, The Atlantic, Stanford Magazine, on the Ludwig Von Mises Institute website, and elsewhere. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, a Fulbright Scholar, and a six-year veteran of the US Army.
