"Fifty years since its opening, Super Fly, the 1970s Soul Cinema film about a street hustler making one last score to get out of the life of crime, remains a powerful influence in American pop culture. The Super Fly Trilogy is the first full-length critical study to analyze in depth the components that made the original 1972 film a force of impact not only for its time but for all of ""in perpetuity,"" in both Hollywood and throughout all of American culture. This study will also look at the two subsequent sequels that continue to follow the story of this fictional, enigmatic figure who has become a folk hero in popular black society, especially in hip-hop culture. And as we observe the power of this story and its themes of street life and racial politics, and how these themes continue to resonate, The Super Fly Trilogy examines the 2018 remake production of the 1972 masterpiece, discussing how and why it failed to become a success while continuing to maintain the respect to the original film document. We will look at the stylistic choices of each director in this franchise as well as the approach of the writers in bringing the character of Priest into new, complex situations and into relevance in contemporary times."

L. Roi Boyd, III is a Professor of Speech and Drama at Virginia State University. He received his MFA degree from Virginia Commonwealth in 2002 in Theatre Pedagogy. He is a professor, guitarist, drummer, and actor; he has been teaching and directing in educational, community, and professional theatre for nearly thirty years in Virginia and North Carolina. He is a historian in African-American film history specializing in race movies and Soul Cinema. Boyd is also a musician, radio host and renown speaking for Unity Worldwide Ministries. He is also a filmmaker, having directed the RLP Productions film Bell Blu in 2008. In addition, he served as co-producer of the film Black Wall Street: The Money, The Music, The People in addition to co-writing the theme song to the movie. Boyd serves as Co-Founding Artistic director of Cultural Libations, a multidisciplinary arts & humanities company. As a scholar, Roi has presented research and moderated panels for The Black Theatre Network, The Southern Theatre Conference, the Gordon Parks Celebration Conference, and the Culturing The Popular Conference. As a Director, his work has been in produced in Norfolk, Richmond, Winston Salem, North Carolina, San Francisco and New York City. Joel E. Fletcher is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He is a self-taught, upcoming artist with a natural eye for creativity. He works with other great creators to help share their artistic visions. He has a passion for abstract art and strives to exceed expectations.
