Naval Academy in 1956 and completed naval aviation flight training in 1957. He flew tactical jet aircraft from various aircraft carriers for twenty years, which included aviation squadron command and command of a Carrier Air Wing (CAG). He also served as Commanding Officer of two amphibious ships, USS Coronado (LPD-11), and as the commissioning Commanding Officer of USS PELELIU (LHA-5).
