Overview

Steve Keene is the most prolific American painter of all time. He has produced more than 300,000 hand-painted works via his studio/chainlink fence cage where he paints more than 50 paintings at a time. Lovingly known for making affordable art, as well as being the indie rock cover art maker to Pavement, The Apples in stereo, and Silver Jews, Keene has long been under appreciated for his importance to the 90s indie art and music scenes. Named ""...a massively dazzling celebration of fandom as an art form"" by Rolling Stone magazine,The Steve Keene Art Book-originally conceived during his sold out show at Shepard Fairey's LA Gallery Subliminal Projects in 2016-is the first art book dedicated exclusively to his work..

Reviews

Praise for The Steve Keene Art Book: The book is a massively dazzling celebration of fandom as an art form -- playful, affectionate, slightly unhinged. - Rolling Stone If you've ever wished coffee table books felt more like rock documentaries, you'll love The Steve Keene Art Book. - PRINT Magazine This is a wonderful book...it's a real keeper, it's a work of art itself. - Sound Opinions Podcast Praise for Steve Keene: [Keene is an] assembly line Picasso. - TIME Keene's work is vibrant, graphic, and funny...There is something modest and machinelike about the way he drifts peacefully from piece to piece, never pausing to fuss over the results. - New Yorker By some measures, Mr. Keene [...] is one of the most successful artists in the world. - New York Times Steve Keene's art caters for the many, not the few. - The Economist Whether you were a part of the indie rock scene in the '90s or are just a fan of the classic music that came out of the fertile indie underground, you've almost certainly come across the art of Steve Keene. - Billboard This guy must be the most prolific artist of all time. - Shepard Fairey, artist Steve Keene's vast, distinctive body of work and his many fans are one big collective renaissance family. He is so appreciated for putting art into people's hands who maybe had not a dime to spare. With each painting, he allows us to remember, and 'be right back there.' We were there. - Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power Steve's work, the vastness of the project, it has the feeling of a churning waterfall of creation. The colors are Warhol primary, it has the directness of graffiti, with the serial fordist impulse of a painting machine ... all inscribed with an unsubtle middle finger to art market masterpiece-ism. - Stephen Malkmus, musician (Pavement, Silver Jews) The Johnny Appleseed of art. - Elsa Longhauser, founding executive director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (Time) Warhol claimed he wanted to be a machine, but Keene IS a machine. - Ryan McGinness
