Reviews

This compelling account of Reverend I. DeQuincy Newman's life-long activism against entrenched racism and for human rights and racial equality is a must-read for all of us committed to the cause of social justice. In narratives both deeply personal and richly historical, Sadye Logan and contributors craft a complex portrait of Newman as a man of dignity and passion, preacher and politician, leader and servant, freedom fighter and bridge builder, visionary and pragmatist. Their essays illuminate an untold chapter in the struggle for civil rights in South Carolina and the nation. Reverend Newman's spirit fills these pages, inspiring readers with visions of hope and a call to action. --Janet Finn, professor of social work, University of Montana

The Spirit of an Activist is essentially biographical, but it uses a diverse choris of voices to capture Newman's rich and varied contribution in transforming South Carolina's rigid and unjust social systems. -- Bob Edmonds, McCormick Messenger
