Overview

What had been a rescue mission has become a hit job. Special Agent Amir Duran can't wrap his head around any of it. First, his boss tells him about the boy down in Zanzibar. He's immune, she says--immune to the Red Death. A potential cure for the most catastrophic disease in human history? If that weren't enough to blow Amir's mind, she lets him know who the brass back in London have chosen to chase the kid down. And, quick--the Russians and Japanese are after the boy too. None of it computes. Just a year ago Amir was still a cop keeping the peace in the squalid slums of Granada, Spain. He hasn't even travelled outside the city since the British invaded when he was a kid. And now they've chosen him--a brand new case officer without an ounce of international field experience--to spearhead the most important covert op in decades. Amir's late grandfather, Jeddo, always warned him about the British. They can't be trusted. All they care about is conquest. But orders are orders, and Amir can handle himself in dangerous situations. When Amir arrives in Zanzibar, though, Jeddo's paranoia begins to ring of prophecy. London's orders have changed. With a ruthless killer on his trail, Amir must call on an unlikely assortment of friends and strangers to get the boy out alive.

Reviews

Duran is back and Ward has drawn the beguiling contradictions in his character in bright and bold relief to drive the second book in this series. Struggling with British Intelligence's new yolk around his neck, Duran takes on the challenge of his career and it takes him beyond the walls of Granada for the first time. Stuck in a web of deceit and playing cat and mouse with murderous foes, Duran's loyalty and humanity are tested, and Ward's epic depictions of the world and people around him give the book a unique richness and drama. I'm ready for book three already! Sam Hiersteiner, contributor, Boston Globe The Sovereign is taut, intense, and disquieting as it is rewarding. Ward is the type of thriller writer who grabs you by the collar and won't let go. Bill Newman, civil rights attorney and author of When the War Came Home With this smart, seductive thriller, Ward takes us even deeper into Special Agent Duran's immersive world. At every propulsive turn, you'll feel the sun's heat at your neck, smell food simmering on a stove, and taste the burn of a stiff drink in your throat. It's an eerily prescient adventure that raises worthy questions about contemporary geopolitics. Meg Little Reilly, author of Everything That Follows Reading The Sovereign is like watching a Hollywood spy flick while micro-dosing acid. Stark, pacy and strangely intoxicating, Ward's prose makes every high calibre gut shot and Machiavellian double cross pop off the page in post-apocalyptic high definition. Kade Crockford, blogger, contributor, The Guardian
