OverviewExcerpt from The Silurian Geology and Faunas of Ontario Peninsula, and Manitoulin and Adjacent Islands The Geology of Canada, by Sir Wm. Logan, publishedbythe Geologi cal Survey of Canada in 1863, includes the only comprehensive account so far published of the Silurian system of southwestern Ontario. This report has long been out of print and so is inaccessible except in the better equipped scientific libraries. Since 1863, many advances have been made in the science of geology, and it is consequently desirable that such fundamental knowledge as that relating to the Silurian rocks of the oldest settled parts of Ontario should be thoroughly revised and brought up to date. Not only is it a part of broad and enlightened education to have a clear knowledge of natural surroundings, but the proper develop ment of our mineral resources and even our agriculture depends upon a clear understanding of geological facts. That no metal mines occur in the area described is true, but the production of non-metallic products such as lime, building stone, salt, gypsum, natural gas, etc., is and has been of the greatest importance in the development of the Ontario penin sula which is one of the most thickly settled parts of Canada. Taken in conjunction with the recent memoir of this department on the Devonian of southwestern Ontario by Clinton R. Staufi'er, the present memoir completes the general description and mapping of the geology of southern Ontario as far east as the areas underlain by rocks belonging to the Ordovician system.
