OverviewWhen Anna's family - and with them her fortune - are destroyed in a fire, she finds herself alone and vulnerable in eighteenth century Amsterdam. Orphaned and penniless, she is forced to find work as a servant girl for music publisher De Malapert. She throws herself into her work, in the hope that someone will notice she is worth more than the average maid. Anna is intrigued by the mysterious De Malapert, and gradually becomes obsessed with him, occupying her mind with fantasies about his life away from the house. From the outside, it would appear that De Malapert's only passion is for his music, but one day Anna discovers the secret that he must keep hidden from the rest of the world. All her hopes are destroyed as she realizes he will never love her.
