Overview

Most sets of ethical principles are said either to express the word of God as revealed to some of us blessed with divine insight or be the unprovable assertions of philosophers from unprovable basic principles these philosophers assert. Are there sound grounds, other than divine revelation or unprovable assertions for determining the ethical principles by which we best can live? This book argues that there are such principles, based on human nature and what makes a good life for beings such as us. There will be no surprises about these principles, as they reflect what most thoughtful ethical people generally have thought in the course of human existence. What is original is their grounding in the nature of human nature. The first step in finding and grounding ethical principles is to set forth some thirty grounds, or bases, of human life-- of human nature, of the dynamics of our lives and of our minds. Then, the book applies these grounds to find universal values about what we owe ourselves, about what we owe people we encounter, about what we owe humanity, about learning and about ways of thinking. It deduces three overarching values to guide how we apply these values to make ethical decisions when the values clash: the golden rule, moderation and balancing the facts, circumstances and pertinent values as we make ethical choices. It then considers the implications for how best live good lives and to seek to influence the organizing of our societies. The book chronicles the author's journey of growth from youthful atheism to a deep sense of spirituality and connects that journey to the book's conclusions about ethics.
