OverviewThe Republic of Crime is a prison memoir written in the Persian language. After the Iranian revolution, heinous crimes and atrocities were committed by the fundamentalist regime against the Iranian people. In fact, such a magnitude of crime has never been adequately documented. This brutality and oppression has continued up to the present day. Since the establishment of this regime, thousands of innocent Iranians have been tortured, executed, or hanged. Hundreds of people have been sentenced to death by stoning. The author gives voice to the victims of the revolution and its repercussions. He was imprisoned by Iranian regime for more than four years. Mahmood Khavar like thousands of other prisoners was brutally tortured and put in solitary confinement. Here, he saw his cellmates tortured into making false confessions. He also saw many others executed, and their corpses shown to him shortly after execution for the purpose of intimidation. The author himself was on death row awaiting execution just because he had criticized the regime. There is absolutely no mercy for those who disparage the Iranian supreme leader. The insight given by Mahmood Khavar into life and imprisonment under the Iranian regime is certain to have a significant impact in the fight for the freedom of thought.
