For some time thereafter he participated in many seminars and creative writing classes, and began his writing with entries in short story contests, with several winning. With that encouragement, he completed his first book, a published memoir of growing up during the 1940s in a small Midwestern town, The Last Decade of Innocence. He followed that successful venture with a three volume set (2008, 2009 and 2010) of humorous stories tracing the fictional residents of a village titled, with tongue in cheek, Sloville: Its Citizens' Saga, Sorta. In 2011, Neil published the first of a mystery trilogy, The Search for Avyce Buckman, and in 2012 the second, The Search for Feeney Williams. During 2013, while researching the third mystery, he published a compilation of short stories titled, The Day Tinker Johnson Died. In 2014, he completed and published the final in the mystery series, The Search for Pugsley Tannon. In 2017 he completed and published The Remarkable Austin Lee, a serious novel about the problems and successes of a young man with a learning disability.
