OverviewThis dangerous world of drama and mystery takes you from Australia to Afghanistan to France... then the action moves to Marseille where honour and revenge, lust and love, family affection and duty bring two love affairs to very different outcomes. Alexander Logan, author of Two Women: Two Worlds explores how religious sensitivities and sexual power play out in the context of Islam and decaying European values. Revenge and honour, the hypocrisy and the self-interest of the fanatic, rob love of its innocence. Tom Grace, a Brisbane surgeon, attempts to find his kidnapped lover, Kaye Reynolds, a journalist, in Afghanistan. Instead, he is abducted by an arms dealer, Ahmed Bakir, and flown to Marseille as Bakir's prisoner. Tom had no idea Kaye was working for the Afghanistan Women's Revolutionary Association with its leader, Minnah Muetton, a French educated Afghan. Bakir hates Minnah's husband and has him murdered. Amadullah, devout Muslim and Minnah's brother seeks revenge; it's a matter of honour. Alexander Logan has a deep understanding of Muslim attitudes and a vivid knowledge of his chosen settings, chiefl y Afghanistan and southern France, particularly Marseille. But this is just background. Th e action is fast, exciting and given some free time~ it is tempting to read the book quickly from cover to cover. Th e characters are eminently believable, and the relationships between those of Muslim and Christian backgrounds are explored with great perception and sympathy. Wealth and poverty, honour and shame, crime and honest living, all are part of this multi-faceted novel. Th is is a remarkable tale which leads one to hope for more in the future. Richard Studholme A second Fabien Bartholdi novel by Alexander Logan? I was pleased to see it, and enjoyed the story. Pacier than Logan's first novel, this one features the same vividly evoked settings, mostly in the south of France, and a range of complex characters whose motivations shift as the situations and relationships develop. The plot is intriguing, the end unpredictable. I'm already looking forward to the next one...
