Overview

In a systematic treatment of Hegel’s concept of philosophy and all of the different aspects related to it, this collection explores how Hegel and his understanding of his discipline can be put into dialogue with current metaphilosophical inquiries and shed light on the philosophical examination of the nature of philosophy itself. Taking into account specific aspects of Hegel’s elaboration on philosophy such the scientificity of philosophy as a self-grounding rational process and his explanation of the relationship between philosophy and the history of philosophy, an international line-up of contributors consider: - Hegel’s concept of philosophy in general from skepticism, idealism, history and difference, to time, politics and religion - The relation of Hegel’s concept of philosophy to other philosophical traditions and philosophers including Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Jacobi - Hegel’s concept of philosophy with reference to philosophy’s relation to other forms of rationality and disciplines - The relation of Hegel’s concept of philosophy to specific issues in present metaphilosophical debates. Reflecting the renewed and widespread interest in Hegel seen in Analytic philosophy and Continental thought, this volume advances study of Hegel’s conceptual tools and provides new readings of traditional philosophical problems.

Reviews

[T]he ambitious intention of the volume ... may pave the way for studies of the metaphilosophical (plural) conceptions of the whole of German classical philosophy. --Archives de Philosophie (Bloomsbury Translation) The approach of this wide-ranging collection is guided by the compelling idea that the actuality of Hegel's thought lies in his systematic conception of philosophy. This groundbreaking volume shows that the critical dimension of the system can be brought to bear on any possible topic of contemporary metaphilosophy, from the scientificity of philosophy to the productive unity of theory and practice --Federico Orsini, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), Brazil The authors elaborated a research on classical German philosophy to contemporary metaphilosophy. Relevance is the transforming work of philosophy as a creative method and productive structure. Hegel's concept of philosophy as a systematic whole is articulated in most contemporary issues in the dialectic of idealism and realism. --Agemir Bavaresco, Professor at Graduate Program Philosophy of Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, PUCRS, Brazil This impressive anthology offers the first to date wide-ranging account of Hegel's concept of philosophy and of its relation to meta-philosophical debates. While combining rigorous historical reconstruction and original theoretical approach, the authors assess the transformative and critical potential of Hegel's notion philosophy and its invaluable relevance for contemporary thought. --Italo Testa, Professor of Theoretical Philosophy and Critical Theory, University of Parma, Italy The rich and comprehensive collection edited by Illetterati and Miolli is a welcome and timely addition to the rising bibliography on metaphilosophy and on Hegel. It significantly contributes to topics such as the method and scientificity of philosophy, its relation to the sciences and the history of philosophy, autonomy and freedom. --Alfredo Ferrarin, Professor, University of Pisa, Italy The recent revival of Hegelian philosophy has witnessed a new willingness to engage with areas outside the usual remit of Hegel scholars . This consistently excellent collection asks not only what philosophy was for Hegel but how Hegel may help in answering what it might be for us. --Paul Redding, Professor Emeritus, The University of Sydney, Australia The brilliant volume edited by Luca Illetterati and Giovanna Miolli more than fills a gap in the recent and abundant literature on Hegel's work. Many intelligent voices from all over the world illuminate there the already imperishable mark that Hegel's philosophical conception of philosophy has left on the discipline. --Miguel Giusti, Professor of Philosophy, Research Group on Hegel, PUCP, Peru This volume is a brilliant idea and enormous intellectual enterprise to reconstruct the concept of philosophy through Hegel, taking into account contemporary metaphilosophical inquiries. Luca Illetterati and Giovanna Miolli reunite in twenty-five essays to deliver an innovative and very welcome guide to key interpretations of Hegel's conception of philosophy. The reader is introduced to insightful and provocative discussions, as well as a multifaceted exploration of Hegel's philosophy of philosophy and the most relevant features related to it. --Pablo Pulgar Moya, Universidad de Santiago, Chile
