OverviewThis story is based on my children's genealogical records and my study of the time period of the American Revolution. I hoped that middle-grade students would identify with, and be inspired by the loyalty and courage of the true character, teen-aged Joseph. Though he was actually impressed as a wagoner for the British, I've fictionalized his dangerous spying adventures with an underground group, and his courageous loyalty to his friend, Martin. Vignettes of Martin's soldiering with the Continental Army are interspersed with Joseph's struggles to help the Patriot cause at home on the farm. The Red Cockade was read by middle school students. Their input is written as comments on the acknowledgements page. A second career of writing began and resulted in four published books in print. When rights reverted to me I published them as e-books on several internet venues. The Red Cockade is my first middle grade/young adult book. and I consider it the book of my heart because it is about true characters from my children's ancestry.
