The Queen's Game: Lady Mary Grey Goes Head to Head with Queen Elizabeth I...

Overview

A game of succession has begun . . . England, 1565 Queen Elizabeth Tudor is wary of the cousins. Ever since the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey nearly wrested the throne from her family, Elizabeth has been keen to ensure the fate of England doesn't land in Grey hands. She has banished Catherine Grey from court, along with her two children, but her unwed sister Mary remains at Whitehall Palace as one of Elizabeth's courtiers. Mary has ambitions for her family and she realizes she may be the only one who can continue the bloodline, seeing as Catherine's marriage has been deemed illegitimate. She does not want to waste any time in bearing children, as she is worried her scoliosis may make pregnancy difficult, so she begins to search for a suitable husband at court. But while she does so, she finds out that her cousin, Lord Darnley is scheming to marry the widowed Queen Mary Stuart. If that marriage goes ahead, Darnley's child may have a strong claim to the throne, which increases Mary Grey's ambition to have an heir of her own. As the game of succession intensifies, will Mary Grey see her family name rise to victory, or tumble into obscurity . . . ?

Author Information

Raymond Wemmlinger has been studying the Tudors for many years, with a particular interest in untold or overlooked stories, especially about royal women, and their ambitions for themselves and their children. His skills as a historian were cultivated in nineteenth century British and American theater through his career of thirty-seven years as curator and librarian of The Players Foundation for Theater Education at The Players in New York City, and as a novelist in his 2007 historical novel Booth's Daughter, about the family struggles of the only child of the famous tragedian Edwin Booth. Raymond has spent all his life in or around New York City, where he earned degrees in English literature from Pace University and librarianship from Pratt Institute. He lives in New Jersey with his family and Golden Retriever. The Queen's Rival: A Novel of Lady Margaret Clifford is the first in a series of his novels. Susan Duerden, an Audie Award-winning audiobook narrator, has won multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards for her work. Among her recordings are An Affair Before Christmas by Eloisa James, The Crystal Skull by Manda Scott, and Lady Vernon and Her Daughter by Jane Rubino and Caitlen Rubino-Bradway. Susan's career spans film, television, voice-over, and animation. She has played critically acclaimed, award-winning theatrical roles internationally, including in London's West End, and Off-Broadway. Recent work includes a recurring role on ABC's Lost, The Unit for CBS, and the feature films Double Duty, Lovewrecked, and Flushed Away for DreamWorks.
