Overview"At three years old, Joel was involved in a motor vehicle accident and received a high-level spinal cord injury. Unable to breathe independently, feel or control anything below his shoulders, life changed instantly. Being paralyzed from the neck down didn't stop Joel from achieving everything he put his mind to. With determination, a loving family, multiple caregivers, and a strong faith in God's plan, these challenges never stopped him. Going through grade school, junior high, and high school, Joel went on to college, living independently. He has many accomplishments, including serving as a camp counselor and a deacon in his church. Now, at the age of 41, Joel is ready to share his story with others, to provide encouragement and inspiration that every life can be useful. Journey with him as he learns to be his own advocate in issues related to health, education, friends, and home life. His story is one of faith, family, forgiveness, and friendship! When asked how he has endured so much, he simply answers, ""God has allowed me to serve Him in ways my parents or I never imagined. He has enabled me to show that anyone can be active if they choose to be. I have been given opportunity to speak with many children and adults and help them learn different perspectives, and I was able to write an entire book, just by using a mouth stick."""
