OverviewThe right to a healthy environment is both an international and a national concern. The 1972 Stockholm Declaration was a harbinger of this right. A flurry of international and regional human rights and environmental treaties mention the fundamental nature of this right. At African regional level, the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights enshrines the right to a satisfactory and comprehensive environment conducive to the development of all peoples.
