The older rocks of the geologic series are found in both the central and the trans-Pecos area, but they have been studied chiefly in the former and little or nothing is known of their exact occurrence in the latter. A few miles south of the present geographic center of the State, in the counties of Mason, Llano, Burnet, aud San Saba, is an outcrop of so-called Archean and earlier Paleozoic rock. This region was known to the Spaniards and was evidently considered by them of much mineral importance.
