The authority for some of these groups is slight and untrustworthy, but nevertheless they have been thus published. Many of the subdivisions are synonyms of different authors, which will require extensive field work for positive identification and correlation. The older rocks of the geologic series are found in both the central and the trans-Pecos area, but they have been studied chiefly in the former and little or nothing is known of their exact occurrence in the latter. A few miles south of the present geographic center of the State, in the counties of Mason, Llano, Burnet, aud San Saba, is an outcrop of so-called Archean and earlier Paleozoic rock. This region was known to the Spaniards and was evidently considered by them of much mineral importance.
