He previously worked as a expert for the European Commission from 1991 to 1994 in the third European Anti Poverty Programme (Poverty 3). His current fields of research are empowerment of underprivileged groups, urban policy and the inclusive labour market. Birte Siim is Associate Professor at the Institute for History, International and Social Studies, University of Aalborg, Denmark. She co-ordinated the national research programme Gender-Empowerment-Politics (GEP) from 1996 to 2002. She is author of Gender and Citizenship: Politics and Agency in France, Britain and Denmark 2000) and has co-edited Contested Concepts. Gender and Social Politics (2002).
