Having spent his formative years in the Royal Navy, he then developed a career in social work. After working in this field, and after gaining academic qualifications, he then went into teaching. On retiring, Graham has spent his time writing. His first book, Ships, Trips and Rites of Passage: A Sailor's Tale, an autobiographical work, was published in September 2022 by Austin Macauley.
