Overview

Journalism is in crisis. Thanks to freesheets, the proliferation of web-based and mobile media platforms and the growing norm of free content, the very future of the press is under threat, and the coming years may see the radical transformation or indeed the loss of some of the industry's greatest and longest-lived institutions. 'The Piano Player in the Brothel' (the book's title refers to the classic joke in which a father tells his son that anything is better than being a journalist...including being the piano player in a brothel) is a stunning reflection on the practice of journalism in general and especially in today's challenging climate. It includes a wealth of anecdotes on the history of journalism and its role as a great instrument of cultural diffusion, a guarantor of freedom of speech, and therefore, a protector of democracy. Timely, incisive and absorbing, 'The Piano Player in the Brothel is a fascinating exploration of an ever-changing and increasingly complex world as seen by an author of international renown.

Reviews

A welcome contribution to a conversation too often dominated by Anglophone perspectives. * The New Yorker * What is the future of journalism? Cebrian (Red Doll), a novelist and one of the original editors of Spain's newspaper of record, El Pais , analyzes the changes to the traditional newspaper in particular and to the profession in general. In this collection of insightful and instructive essays, he addresses the challenges journalists face in this age of instantaneous electronic media. The illustrious newspaperman brings a sense of history and gravitas to his writing, a result of living and working in a country transitioning from the media-restricted Fascist regime of Francisco Franco to a struggling democracy with a free and open press. This experience is what leads Cebrian to assert that journalism plays a vital role in protecting civil liberties and democratic values. This gem of a book is a valuable manual for aspiring journalists and an informative guidebook for the rest of us. * Library Journal * This impressive first novel by the director of El Pais, Spain's largest newspaper, has a Graham Greene-like resonance. The light the book throws on the complexities of political life in modern Spain should be edifying to readers here. * Publisher's Weekly (on Red Doll) * More than just a love story or a thriller, this novel thoughtfully depicts Spain's current situation as it entertains by conventional means. -- Jack Shrieve * Library Journal *
