OverviewExcerpt from The Phosphate Rocks of Arkansas The most important Arkansas deposits now known are in north central Arkansas, lying within parts of the counties of Independence, Stone, Izard, Sear'cy, Marion, Baxter and Newton. The deposits of this locality are now attracting attention, as two railway companies are building lines into the region. One line is building up White River from Batesville, on the north side of the phosphate area, and the other line is building southeast of Harrison through the south side of the locality. These two railways in providing transportation, will rehder possible the development of the phosphate deposits, which have here tofore been without transportation. One company, the Arkansas Phosphate Company, on the line north of Batesville, is now manufacturing acid phosphate. The rock this company is mining works up into a dry, friable acid phosphate. This rock is soft and easily crushed, and in appearance is identical with some of the Tennessee phosphate rocks.
