Writing that holds my attention and provides surprises throughout. Writing that features believable characters and plots requiring little editing. Writing that takes the reader on a journey away from reality. Fourteen novellas were submitted to The Paul Cave Prize for Literature 2025. Of these, four were particularly enjoyable reading and really stood out as high quality writing that fulfilled many of my requirements. These were Tales of Homicide by Eric G Ekaut, The Quay by Frank McMahon, The Hobo Murders by David Hann and Come Back Shane by Robert Weinberger. After great deliberation, Come Back Shane by Robert Weinberger is the clear winner. Robert's writing is strong and atmospheric. His novella is a celebration of writing with really considered vocabulary and diction. I love the period setting, the knowledgeable historic content, the engaging style about cinema and romance set against the reflection and depression of the modern world. It is clearly written by a Californian film buff and for me this is the one to beat. So, many congratulations Robert. The Hobo Murders by David Hann is Highly Commended. This is powerful, pacy atmospheric writing which makes the reader think they are on the railroad with the hobos in 1916 with the fear of death thrown in for good measure. Convincing colloquial writing and it's enjoyable to learn something too. Thank you to all the entrants for their interest. As ever, I have enjoyed reading each and every submission and deciding which ones should win their categories.
