Previously he worked at the University of Oxford as Senior Research Fellow at the European Studies Centre and the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. He has published widely on journalism history, comparative journalism and journalism and technology in journals such as Journalism, International Journal of Press/Politics, Journalism Studies, and European Journal of Communication. His book Newsworkers: A Comparative European Perspective (2016) was published by Bloomsbury Academic. He served as chair of the Journalism Studies division of the International Communication Association from 2015-2018, and he is the winner of the 2019 Wolfgang Donsbach Outstanding Journal Article of the Year Award.
