Reviews

'Big Bill' Warner, what can you say? Photographer, journalist, racer, event organizer, friend, drinking and dining companion extraordinaire. Now a beautiful book full of evocative photographs -- is there no end to his talent? -- Brian Redman, 1970 Targa Florio winner; 1974, '75, '76 Formula 5000 Champion; 1968, '69, '70, '72 1000 km of Spa-Francorchamps winner; 1970, '76, '81 Daytona 24 hour winner; 1975, '78 Sebring winner An incredible photo memoir by Bill Warner. A journey through road racing that shows us the people, the cars, the delicate moments, the fame, the glory, the disappointment. Bill Warner's affectionate yet realistic portraits and captions are the best collection I've ever seen. -- Mario Andretti, 1969 Indianapolis 500 Winner, 1978 Formula 1 Driver's Champion As we move forward in this modern era of constant video coverage, only the great art of the split-second still images captured by masters like Bill Warner will be left to remind us of what racing was really like when you could clearly see the intensity in a driver's eyes and the emotion imparted by speed. -- Peter Brock, 1970, '71 SCCA National Champion, C Production; 1971, '72 2.5-Liter Trans-Am Champion, Brock Racing Enterprises Bill Warner has witnessed some of the greatest moments in racing, and many of the sport's special memories have been captured through his lens. I enjoy looking back at the racing action and the legends of motorsports through Bill's images. This collection really provides a unique view of our sport's history - from the other side of the fence. -- Roger Penske, 18 Indianapolis 500 victories, Team Penske; 1962 USAC Road Racing Champion; 1968, '69 Trans-Am Champion, Team Penske Bill Warner's eye behind the camera is exceptional. His photos become classics and I am so honored to be part of this exceptional collection. -- Hurley Haywood, 1973, '81 12 Hours of Sebring Winner; 1977, '83, '94 24 Hours of Le Mans Winner; 1973, '75, '77, '79, '91 24 Hours of Daytona Winner Composing with the camera has always been black magic in my book, for as a painter, I can adjust things a bit to get the image the way I want it. Bill, on the other hand, has to find it. Perusing this book is like settling down to a banquet of great images. I needed this book. -- Miles Collier, Miles Collier Collections I don't know anyone more knowledgeable about our sport than Bill, he is a true Mine of information. Not only does he have an intimate knowledge of every car that exists, but knows its pedigree and also tales of every driver that drove them. He has the respect of every driver who is fortunate enough to know him. This dedication has handed him a great advantage in creating his dream of the Amelia Island Concours, surely one of the leading events in the world. Battling through illness and the Pandemic, he and his team illustrate the Passion he has for the world of cars, we owe him for sharing it with us. -- Derek Bell MBE, 1975, '81, '82, '86, '87 24 Hours of Le Mans winner; 1986, '87, '89 Daytona 24 hour winner It is easy to talk about destiny when history is written. Bill Warner's life is worthy of an adventure movie hero. With his camera, he immortalized the most beautiful moments of his life, of our lives. Like Tarzan, Bill has his Jane ... Jane is his strength, his rock, his greatest love. And then there is the speed, competition, beautiful cars, parties with friends and all those things that, put end to end, transform a life into destiny. He is all that, Bill Warner. A leader, a friend -- my friend. -- Jacky Ickx, 1969, '75, '76, '77, '81, '82 24 Hours of Le Mans winner; 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally winner What an absolutely extraordinary collection of motor racing photography Bill Warner brings to you. I have known Bill now for 50 years, first meeting in the dusty paddocks of the very early '70s when he was at his busiest. We immediately became fast friends and have remained so over the years. Many of his legendary photos from those days have now become iconic glimpses into the glory days of motor racing history and will remain so far into the future. This is a book that any serious motor racing enthusiast will have to add to his or her collection of motor racing literature and memorabilia. -- David Hobbs, 1971 Formula 5000 Champion; 1983 Trans-Am Champion
