Overview

"Our house is on fire! Who will answer the call? Is there One Idea that can save the world? Is there One Idea that can bring us all together - no matter what our faith, our politics, our culture - to do what is necessary and right in the face of the enormous challenges that confront us - environmentally, economically, socially and spiritually? Author and poet Laurence Overmire believes he has found an idea that can do just that. It is a very old idea, but we have not paid attention to its glaring ramifications. Will we change the way we think and the way we live or are we doomed to bring about the end of all that humankind has created and accomplished in the long course of our history on this planet? This second edition is a message of hope in a time of crisis. Overmire presents us with a roadmap for how to bring about the healthy world that we seek. His overall message is stirring and uplifting. This book will make you feel good about yourself, your neighbors, and this beautiful planet of which we all are a part. We can save the world. It's all up to us. Each one of us. As Overmire tells us, it's time to awaken to our best selves. And we haven't a moment to lose. Praise for the First Edition of THE ONE IDEA THAT SAVES THE WORLD ""This message of unity certainly reflects both the science around climate change and the movement we must build to challenge it!"" Bill McKibben, author, environmentalist, founder of 350.org""Laurence Overmire's poignant and passionate book, The One Idea That Saves the World, and his urgent call to live that one idea, presents a powerful truth and a heartfelt vision of hope that just may galvanize the world to do what needs to be done to save itself."" World Business Academy""The One Idea that Saves the World is an excellent delivery of a spirited message of how we as human beings can become conscious of living in balance and harmony - the TIME IS NOW."" Mona Polacca, member of the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers""The future of a habitable planet requires a significant shift from the status quo. Inertia and time are unified against us. Laurence Overmire has written a direct, simple, and compelling call to conscience. I hope people hear it."" Aaron Viles, chair of the board of directors of Healthy Gulf, formerly Gulf Restoration Network""Overmire had me on page 12 when he wrote that this book was about wisdom... which translates into 'immediate personal action'... he has really created a teaching vehicle... a very worthy work."" Rt. Rev. George E. Packard, retired US Army officer, Bishop of the Episcopal Church""The One Idea That Saves The World is, not surprisingly, both incredibly simple and incredibly profound. It takes a poet to present profound sim-plicity in language that touches the rhythms of the heart. That poet is Laurence Overmire, and his poetic message is to us a Call to Conscience and a Call to Action, one that will resonate with all the peoples and the rhythms of the planet."" John Lundin, author, The New Mandala: Eastern Wisdom for Western Living, written with the Dalai Lama; and Journey To The Heart Of The World, written with the indigenous peoples of Colombia"

"""A thoughtful commentary on the biggest issue of our day - the survival of humankind."" Thom Hartmann, radio/TV and bestselling author""The One Idea That Saves The World is a call for action and a call for unity at a time when our political reality needs it most. Overmire is frank and unflinching in his assessment of the source of our cultural and political division and the ramifications if such division persists. He delivers a sober message on the collective state of human governance in prose, poetry and narrative familiar to us all. But despite all this, Overmire succeeds in ultimately providing a vision of hope and a promise that our efforts in coming together for the benefit of all humankind will be rewarded."" Jessica Mason Pieklo, Senior Vice President, Executive Editor, Rewire.News""Overmire points to the need for 'immediate personal action' by each and every individual... The book will energize those who comprehend the challenges we are facing, and hopefully awaken others who are not yet aware, are afraid to take action, or think it is someone else's problem."" Marcia G. Yerman, writer, artist, co-founder of CultureID""This poet rightly yells Fire in our crowded house-the hour is late and the world needs rousing. Kudos for caring, daring, and acting on it. Firefighters needed!"" Raffi Cavoukian, singer, author, children's champion, ecology advocate, founder of Child Honouring""This is an urgent message for today, a dream and vision grounded in pressing realities. These realities demand that individuals reconsider who we are and choose to become part of our greater oneness, a new power that will take on the urgent task of saving ourselves and our planet for the future."" Timothy Collins, proprietor, Then & Now Media; former Assistant Director, Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs"

Author Information

"Laurence Overmire has had a multi-faceted career as poet, author, actor, director, educator and genealogist. Scottish historian Ted Cowan (University of Glasgow) calls him ""a true sennachie, a genealogist as well as a bard."" The sennachies of ancient Celtic tradition were voices of conscience, who knew the legends, the history and the ancestral lineages. They united the people in story and song, arguing for justice and illuminating the difference between right and wrong. Overmire is, in many ways, a modern-day inheritor of that ancient tradition and his work represents a call to conscience and a call to action. He is an advocate for a healthy, just and peaceful world. His poetry has been widely published in the U.S. and abroad. As a genealogist, he has helped hundreds of thousands of people connect with their family roots. As an actor, he has performed on Broadway, film and television. He has been teaching arts programs in the schools and other venues for over twenty years. www.laurenceovermire.com"
