Overview

This is the first book-length study of the Old-English Judith which considers all different aspects of its composition and reception. It is an original work containing a substantial amount of research on Anglo-Saxon material and the topic of Judith overall written in German and makes it accessible in English. A key contribution to the field. The Old English translation of the Biblical Judith is preserved in only one manuscript, the B.L. Cotton Vitellius A XV. Even though the extant text is incomplete at the beginning and possibly at the end, the poem is commonly recognized as an exceptionally fine piece of Old English writing. While the poem has received a fair amount of critical attention in articles and discussion in more general contexts (i.e. on women in Old English literature), it has only once been the subject of a longer study, i.e. Gregory Foster's Judith. Studies in Metre, Language and Style with a View to Determining the Date of the Old English Fragment and the Home of its Author. Although it is a very valuable scholarly work, it first appeared in 1892 and is outdated in many respects. My work offers a thorough literary, cultural and linguistic study of Judith; it does not only bring together aspects highlighted in other discussions and contexts and evaluates them from the point of view of a complete study of the text, but also explores new perspectives and places the poem within the context of theological thought and religious poetry of Old English and Middle English provenance. My main focus is on the depiction of women but the results of my study go beyond this focus.

Reviews

This book is greatly welcomed not only because here at last is a book on Judith but also, for the comprehensiveness of its treatment and for the new insights it provides across an ambitious range of interrelated areas. (Prof. Hugh Magennis, Queen's University Belfast) ...a clear and comprehensive overview of the poem... The descriptions of the text, tradition and poetics represent the work of a scholar au fait with the field, and are readable and comprehensible for the expert and the novice alike. (Prof. Tracey-Anne Cooper, St. John's University, NY)
