Writing as The Night Owl, Mitchell and his wife Janie nightly prowled the many night spots of the Island, and chronicled who and what they saw. Galveston's most famous story teller, Bill Cherry, has compiled a number of Mitchell's weekly newspaper columns to give readers a first hand sense of what that period was all about. Author Cherry's 2000 book, Bill Cherry's Galveston Memories was a best seller that sold thousands.

Christie The Beachcomber Mitchell was a well-known public relations expert who marketed Galveston Island's tourist attractions when the city was known as Sin City. William S. Bill Cherry has written over six hundred hundred period stories about Galveston and its people. They were weekly columns for the Galveston County Daily News.
