Overview

Excerpt from The New Reformation and Its Relation to Moral and Social Problems The last chapter may not appear to have a very direct connection with the other parts of the book, but, to the writer, it is perhaps the most important sec tion, dealing, as it does, with ideas and principles, the realisation of which must necessarily have a profound influence on the moral and religious thought of our time. What has been well termed The New Re formation - a phrase for which I am indebted to Mrs. Humphrey Ward - must include not only the inner religious life of man, it must include the whole of life; for religion, whether it take the form of art, or moral endeavour, or philosophic research, being the bed-rock on which the higher life of man is founded, if that foundation is in anywise altered, the whole structure must necessarily be affected by the change. It is recorded of Plotinus that he died with these words on his lips It has been my aim to bring the God which is in man into harmony with the God which is in the universe. This, too, is the aim of the New Reformation, and it is an aim which can only be realised by bringing the influence of religion to bear on the outer life - the life of the citizen, the workman.
