The Mahabharata, one of the most popular epics, has had a remarkable impact on literary and cultural thought in India through the centuries. It is also of immense religious and philosophical importance and is considered itihasa, literally ‘that which happened’, or sacred history. Nikhil Govind is the Head of the Manipal Centre for Humanities, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Karnataka, India. He has published in the areas of Indian aesthetic and political modernism and is on the editorial board of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics. He is the author of Inlays of Subjectivity: Affect and Action in Modern Indian Literature (2019) and Between Love and Freedom: The Revolutionary in the Hindi Novel (2014). He has co-authored Shadow Craft: Visual Aesthetics of Black and White Hindi Cinema (2021) along with Gayathri Prabhu.
