OverviewThis is the first-person account of my great uncle Tom. He never talked much about his experience as a belly gunner in WWII during his lifetime. When he was in his late 80s, perhaps sensing that his time was running short, he hand-wrote a document describing, in his dashing, all-caps, 1940s print, exactly what he had been through in precise detail. It is an incredible and harrowing tale - having the engine shot out at 29,000 feet and plummeting through the sky while being shot at; later crash landing in Nazi-occupied France and escaping back to England via the French Underground and a Portuguese fishing boat; fighting his way through a massive air battle shortly before D-Day. The personal details of Tom's story would have been entirely lost to time if he had not had the foresight and practical-minded clarity of purpose to document this history before he passed away. It's a rare history - there are not many first-person accounts of people who experienced what he did in that little ball turret, flying above Nazi-controlled Europe. May we never forget what Tom and so many like him did to fight evil, and the indomitable bravery and daring spirit of the Greatest Generation. The story that follows is in Tom's first-person voice, as he wrote it himself.
