Overview

Here - I am waiting to know about this offer of mine. The woman is no good to me. Who'll have her? In a spell of drunken rage and stupidity, Michael Henchard sells his wife and child at a county fair for five guineas. It would be an action that would plague at Michael's conscience for years to come and a secret he would work hard to conceal. Eighteen years later, Michael has risen to the position of Mayor. He is held in high esteem by the close-knit townsfolk of Casterbridge but when his wife and child unexpectedly return and misfortune befalls the town, the Mayor is forced to confront his past and his own flawed nature. Vividly told with startling honesty and harrowing insight, The Mayor of Casterbridge explores fate, the consequences of youthful mistakes, and the possibility of redemption. Hardy's classic novel is a moving study of character and a masterful example of his ability to present the realities of rural life in all their beauty and brutality. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Arcturus Classics series brings together high-quality paperback editions of classics works, presented with contemporary graphic cover designs. Author Information

The novelist and poet Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 in Higher Bockhampton, Dorset. Hardy began novel-writing in the hope that it might finance his transition from architect to poet. The first of his so-called Wessex novels, Far From the Madding Crowd, enabled him to fulfil that hope. A series of Wessex novels would follow, with the later ones (especially Tess of the d'Urbervilles) the subject of much adverse comment by Victorians offended by Hardy's liberal social attitudes. Hardy's work would continue to push the boundaries until his death in 1928.
