OverviewMargaret Drake Elliott and I became friends in her 92nd year of life. During the two and one-half years we spent together on a weekly basis, we became close friends. She trusted me with the information she provided for her oral history on what it was like to grow up in a rural setting, in a small midwestern town in a country-doctor's home. While she spent her adult life in Muskegon where she lived with husband Paul, she remembered her roots when she decided to leave the family estate, that of her father and mother, Dr. Wilke and Rhoda Waggoner Drake to the community-at-large. The home of her childhood she named Drake Memorial House. This is the story of the family that lived in that setting and a small glimpse into the life at the turn-of-the century. This book received the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award for the best new Historical Book for the summer of 2011. A family farm where I grew up with my other 3 siblings and living with my parents and grandparents in Merrill, Mich. where my family grew crops and cared for different kinds of animals. My formal education consisted of a parochial school for 8 years, graduation from an area high school, and some college. I married my husband Don in 1965 and raised a family of three children, Matthew, Angela and Paul, also on a farm. My community life has involved the Breckenridge Area Chamber of Commerce, the Breckenridge-Wheeler Area Historical Society, Inc., the Evening Blossoms Garden Club where I have served in various capacities as officers or trustees of boards including my church. My workplace environments have scanned graphic design, a township clerk for 8 years and as a county commissioner. My interests include gardening, writing, working on projects with my husband and our grandchildren. While retired from active employment, I now enjoy the fruits of my labors and continue to volunteer in my community. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
