OverviewExcerpt from The Mackenzie River Basin In 1792 Mackenzie ascended Peace river. He passed a post which had been built under his instructions in 1788 and up to which the river had already been surveyed on behalf of the North West Company, and con tinned upward to a point 6 miles above the mouth of Smoky river. After spending the winter at this point he set out in the spring of 1793 on that memorable voyage of discovery that was to carry him to the Pacific coast, ascending the Peace, the upper waters of which had never yet been explored. A complete survey of Athabaska river appears to have been made by David Thompson, one of the greatest of Canadian explorers. In 1799 he descended Pembina river. On April 25 he reached the junction of the Pembina with the Athabaska, which he surveyed to the mouth of Lesser Slave Lake river. He then surveyed Lesser Slave Lake river to Lesser Slave lake, and returning to the Athabaska, travelled downstream to the mouth of the Clearwater.' In the spring of 1804 be surveyed the Atha baska from its mouth to the Clearwater and in 1810 explored a portion of the upper course of the river.
