OverviewSome were politicians, others were soldiers, and a few were opportunists, but most of these men and women (and children) were ordinary individuals who made critical decisions, under unusual circumstances, in the era of slavery, secession, and Civil War. Their decisions were often made in the spur of the moment, with no idea of the future outcomes. Most of their choices were well intentioned, but not all; and, while many worked out well, others did not. Some decisions were misguided; simply because the individual had all of the frailties of their (and our) humanity. A person's more noble qualities, such as compassion, honesty, and courage are often described as their humanity. However, our humanity can also include disrespect, greed, and arrogance. The Lincoln Era is structured as vignettes of about 3-4 pages each and, while several include Lincoln, most are about others of whom only a few changed the course of history. Mr. Dorris assumes the role of a narrator, introducing people whose humanity, both noble and ignoble, was on full display in those chaotic times.
