Reviews

In this lucid little book, De Grauwe, a Belgian economist now at the London School of Economics, explains why neither a pure market economy nor a purely government-controlled one is desirable. Getting the balance between market and government is extremely difficult. In practice, we lurch too far in one direction and then the other. * Financial Times, Best Books of 2017 * One of Europe's leading economists, Paul de Grauwe is such a guide. In his lucid new book, the Belgian professor now based at the LSE explains how one should think about the balance between markets and governments as systems interacting with one another over time: an excellent little guide to how one should think about where we are and might be going. * Martin Wolf, Financial Times * An excellent book on the ideological debate between market and state... The book is just a joy to read. Both economists and general readers will find it very useful. * Syed Basher (East West University, Bangladesh), Economic Record * The book is a concise and straightforward look into the application of modern capitalism, its esoteric contradictions that threaten to tear it apart, and its relationship with government... Aside from the effective analysis, a major advantage of the book is the explanatory narrative that the author utilizes, with minimal references, making it accessible to both academic and non-academic audiences. * Alexandros Kyriakidis, JMCS *
