Overview

It was the year of our Lord 1630, on the 29th of May that Charles II was born to Charles I, King of England, and Henrietta Maria of France. At the same time in far less opulent surroundings, Zackariah Pemberton was born to Thomas and Me'va Pemberton in a small town to the north of London Town. Though this young boy was born at the same time as his King, he leads a different path in life fueled by the policies of his King. Zackariah's father was a wealthy grain merchant who took pride in teaching his son the techniques and important points of his trade. When Zachariah reached the age of breeching, his father begins to take his son with him on his travels around the local shires so that Zackariah could one day take over the family business. This idyllic family life came to an abrupt end due to the intense religious disagreements of the population. When Zackariah and his father returned home from one of their trips it was to find that riots, religious bigotry and hatred of the Irish Catholics prevailed. As the countrywide riots became worse he saw his parents killed and was only saved by their housekeeper and footman getting him to realize the danger he was in.After barely escaping with his life, the ten year old lad descended into the underworld of slums and rampant plague. Throughout the next two years he survived on his wits and ingenuity taught him by his father. Then one mistake in his short life saw him kidnapped and placed with other men and boys on a slave ship heading to the Bahamas. The slaves (called euphemistically, Indentured Workers) were a mixed lot but mainly Irish who had been enslaved by the English and were used a human fodder in the Tobacco and Cane fields of their colonies. After three years of enslavement in the Bahamas, he was transported across the seas to his master's new plantation in Virginia. Heading to the New World, He was not sure what the future would hold for him. He only knew he had to survive. In Virginia, he found his master was more thoughtful and rounded towards his slaves than other masters he had known or heard of. Hence when Zackariah suggested an improvement to operations, the Master noted it and once proved it would work profitably, promoted Zackariah to be in charge of a group of slaves to implement the new process. From there on, Zackariah's reputation grew supplemented by the use of the knowledge his father had taught him many years ago about land use and grains. Overtime he became an essential part of his master's organization, not just a leader of a group of slaves, but providing advice about the crops. After several years of bondage, his master was benevolent enough and appreciative enough of Zackariah's workmanship and dedication that he set Zackariah free along with his Irish wife. The two of them took the knowledge and respect they had gained and built up their own trading empire, not just with grains but textiles and other goods needed in the New World. They established a system of trade along with connections along the eastern coast and its burgeoning settlements. They changed trade as most people at that time knew it all the way across the Atlantic back to London town.
