Moreover, when it comes to salary negotiation, research shows that both men and women will judge a woman less favorably who asks for a higher starting salary than a man with the same credentials asking for the same salary. And if you are thinking of starting a family, research shows that mothers were significantly less likely to be recommended for employment, and when they were, they were offered $11,000 less in starting compensation, on average, than childless women, while men are not penalized for having a family. This may sound discouraging and depressing that there are unspoken rules women must navigate to be successful in the workplace.
