The Laws of ah!: and Our Boundless Mindscapes

Overview

As we move from a simple world dominated by material realities to an increasingly complex and virtual one, many old explanations, traditions, and practices are becoming outdated. So, which are still valid, and which are best left behind? The Laws of ah! takes you on an informal yet novel tour of reality and the spectrum of human endeavors, with one eye on matter and the other on meaning, including the spiritual realms, the ongoing mystical revival, and our newly emerging cosmology. By redefining the roles of science, politics, religion and spirituality, it also takes a fresh look at the major institutions that claim to rule our lives.Materialism is passing, The gold is in the mind, not the matter! Thus, minding the business of your own mind is paramount to your progress and well-being. Western society has long struggled with a sterile religion-versus-science impasse. To move forward we need to rethink the science-religion-politics discussion, which I approach in three steps (""books""): Book l kickstarts a discussion on the nature of reality using Ken Wilber's 'quadrants' model, which I then reformulate, changing the underlying premises that have dominated western thinking for centuries. I propose a novel frame of reference, spelling these ideas out in detail, including several new terms coined ad hoc to get beyond current muddles in terminology. Book II addresses the problems of current global scales and complexity, and some of the limitations of the old religious and political conceptions in this new context. Book III looks at the growing wave of experience in transpersonal psychology, integrates current advances in cosmology, and proposes a different approach to religion and spirituality. It then looks at how to go beyond The Books. With these changes and additions, it is possible to make clear distinctions between teaching and preaching, and between science, technology, politics, religion, spirituality, and mysticism, amongst other things. These distinctions offer new perspectives on the age-old deadlocks that plague our current discussions on these crucial issues. In turn, a better definition of these fields should aid the search for viable solutions to some of the current global problems and affairs of states.

Author Information

About the author: Michael I Christie was born in New York, but grew up in a bicultural family setting in Argentina, at a time when the newer scientific and materialistic frame of thought was gaining ground in a Roman Catholic dominated social backdrop. He shunned religion when he was seven or eight and pursued a scientific education in organismal biology and behavioral ecology through university, and married with the fairytale illusion of living 'happily ever after.' Life was objective, direct, and obvious. This little worldview soon shattered. He lost his job, divorced, and was forced to review almost everything. Counseling ('therapy') allowed him to revisit religion and philosophy. A friend gave him Ken Wilber's ""Up from Eden."" More of Ken's books followed. In the 90's he studied transpersonal psychology with Stan Grof and certified as a Holotropic Breathwork facilitator. He later worked with social facilitators in consensus building around conservation and environmental issues. As a complement, he studied social psychology and mediation. Enough formalities. I prefer a more personal tone. Though much of my life has been associated with academia and I have taught various courses, I am neither an educator nor an academic by profession. This might be a limitation, but it has also freed me from many of the constraints imposed by institutional settings. Thus, the insights gained and presented here are the result of decades pursuing my own path fueled by a deep interest in the fundamental issues of life. Wisdom may come from constant mindfulness, but sharing and validating these often-complex ideas has more to do with crafting precise yet accessible explanations and illustrations, and then exposing them to open scrutiny. I offer them here both as a contribution to our never-ending quest, and as an opportunity to test their validity.
