Overview

Have you ever looked in the mirror and asked, Who the hell is that? Ste7en Foster thought he knew the answer to that question. But when a trio of tragedies struck, he didn't know who he was anymore. When he went looking, he didn't find himself. Instead, he saw 22 versions of himself, identities he had designed and used like masks-consciously and subconsciously-through the years. And each had their own story. Ad man. Madman. Father. Feminist. Freak of nature. Man of faith. Out Hot 100 lister. Urban Dictionary term. The funniest writer-director in anime history, the man behind Ghost Stories. Survivor. Sinner. Defender. The Other Man. The Sheep in Wolf's Clothing. This is a collection of stories that are heartbreaking, hilarious, disturbing, and inspiring. Some intense and many unforgettable. Always insightful, often illuminating. They're about facing who you think you are, who you hide behind, and finding the real you beneath all your disguises. The Last Alias is not a book about one man, but about the many lives one man can live. It's about listening to and looking through yourselves so you can discover who you really are. This is a book about Ste7en Foster. But it is everyone's story.

Reviews

I am NOT a reader. I'm a music listener, news watcher, and social media scroller. I can't remember the last time I read a book cover-to-cover. But Holy Shit... I just consumed The Last Alias in less than 24 hours. Reading this felt surreal. The stories are all yours, but the relatability is guttural, all-encompassing humanity at its core. I feel very fortunate to have read this in this evolving phase of my life as I am redefining what I am and who I want to be in latter stages. Having shared experiences of betrayal and loss hurts. But as you point out, we are soooo much more than that. -Brian Fisher

Author Information

For 16 years, Steven Foster was anime's most creative and celebrated writer/director, one of the only w/ds fans new by name. It's a name that Out Magazine put on their annual Hot 100 list in 2005. Play Magazine named him Producer of The Year, the first time the industry bible gave that honor and the only one to ever receive it. His name spawned an actual term in the Urban Dictionary. And it's a name associated with some of anime's most unique series and films-Cromartie High School, Colorful!, The Super Milk-Chan Show, Gilgamesh, the Appleseed franchise, and the cult comedy classic and internet phenomenon that is Ghost Stories, a show hailed as the best anime dub ever made. His work has appeared on G4, SKYTV-UK, Cartoon Network, The Anime Network, and can be currently seen on the streamers Hulu, Netflix, and CrunchyRoll. The Last Alias: True stories and a tale that might be is a stunning literary debut, first creative endeavor post-anime, and the introduction of his new identity as Ste7en Foster. The circumstances that brought about the name change is just one in a collection of stories of self expression, self realization, self awareness, and ultimately self discovery. They range from the hilarious to the heartwarming, from the intense to the heartbreaking, from the enlightening to the uplifting. And they are all unforgettable.
